The German cockroach is a common household pest that can cause asthma and carry harmful bacteria. It can move between apartments and buildings, making it hard to control large infestations.

Identification

The German cockroach is small, fast, and can hide in cracks. Adult females are light brown with two black stripes on their backs and may carry an egg case. Nymphs are smaller and darker.

Control

An integrated pest management (IPM) approach controls German cockroaches. This includes inspecting for cockroaches, using targeted insecticide treatments, and maintaining cleanliness to reduce their food and water sources.

Directed insecticide treatments

Baits have been proven effective in controlling German cockroach populations—place bait in areas where cockroaches are seen, such as near the sink or dishwasher. ULV/chemical treatments may be necessary for larger infestations.

Sanitation/Prevention

Keep your home clean and free of food and water sources to make the bait more appealing to cockroaches. Seal food containers, cracks, and crevices, and fix leaky pipes to prevent infestations.
